Set up Nextcloud clients by installing the desktop or mobile app, entering your instance address, signing in, and choosing which files or photos should sync locally.
Choose the right client
Nextcloud offers a desktop client for Windows, macOS, and Linux plus mobile apps for iOS and Android. The web interface is useful when you are on an untrusted or temporary device. Use the official client for the operating system you actually use and keep the app updated through its normal channel.
Connect a desktop
Start the desktop client and enter the address of your Nextcloud instance. Authenticate in the browser or client as requested, then choose a local folder. Select all files for a full mirror or select individual folders when the computer has limited disk space. The client watches the local folder and synchronizes changes in both directions. A green or equivalent success state means the current queue is clear; an error state needs attention before you assume a file is safely copied.
Connect a phone
Sign in to the mobile app with the same instance address. Browse files online without storing everything on the handset, or mark selected folders for offline access. Camera upload is a separate choice: pick a destination folder and decide whether cellular data is permitted. Automatic upload copies new photos and videos; it does not automatically remove the originals from the camera roll. Check available device storage before enabling large offline folders.
Keep sync predictable
- Use clear, stable folder names and avoid editing the same file simultaneously on several devices.
- Wait for pending transfers to finish before shutting down or changing a folder location.
- Read conflict notifications rather than deleting one of the versions blindly.
- Use the web interface to confirm a file exists at the destination when a device reports an error.
Check the first workflow
Create a small test file in the web interface, edit it on the desktop, and confirm the change appears on the phone. Then test a photo upload and an offline folder before moving your main library. Versioning and the trash can provide recovery options, but they are not a substitute for checking the sync status.
